Packed hall for Scorpion Fight Night

A PACKED St Patrick’s Hall in Ballymoney was treated to a cracking night’s boxing last Friday as the Scorpion Boxing Club took on an Ulster Select squad as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations and the local club did not disappoint losing only three contests out of 11 contests.

The first three contests featured Jamie McCook, Stuart Walker 27k and Oran Doherty 36k all making their debuts against more experienced opponents and they all put on great displays.

Next up was Keelan McAlister against Ben Henderson (Coleraine) 27k and young Keelan boxed slick out of a southpaw stance to take the decision.

Brian McAlister 52k proved too strong for his opponent Clem Higgins (Antrim), his corner retiring their man in the second round.

Micheal Coyles was next up against Sam Beattie (Coleraine) in a good hard contest between 2 southpaws. The match was in the balance going into the last round with young Beattie just edging it. Ryan Wallace 57k took on Darragh McVey (Springhill) and seemed to have dominated the three rounds with his sharp double jab only for the judges to think otherwise and award McVey a majority decision.

Next up was Micheal McAlister 54k who earned best boxer of the night with an agressive display of body punching to win a unanimous decision over Jamie Douglas of Skerries.

James McNaughton 57k took on Sean McNamee from Springhill in a tough contest with James edging the decision.

The penultimate contest featured Seamus McAlister 54k against Daniel Lewis (Antrim), Seamus controlled the contest working his jab and body punching to good effect to earn a deserved unanimous decision.

The final contest of the night featured 17-year-old Karol Dlugosz, reigning County and Ulster Novice Cruiserweight champion, against a very tough 28-year-old Audrius Grakalskis (Springhill) who is Irish Heavyweight Champ. This was a tough contest over 3 x 2 minute rounds with the taller Springhill man edging the first two rounds with his long jab. Karol however came roaring back in the third with head and body attacks to win the last round in what was a very hard punching contest. The decision was awarded to the Springhill man in the closest of contests.
