Ulster Elite boxing coming to city soon

FOR the first time in its history the Ulster Elite Amateur Boxing Championships will be held in Londonderry and it is the first instalment in the programme of events organised by the County Derry Boxing Board as part of the City of Culture celebrations.

County Secretary Min McCann said: “There’s a long tradition of boxing, both amateur and professional in the city and the City of Culture events give us the opportunity to join in the celebration of that tradition.

“We’re delighted to bring these prestigious championships to Derry and we thank the Ulster Boxing Council for that opportunity.

“The preliminary rounds and semi-finals will be staged at the DuPont Rec Club, regarded as the premier venue for boxing locally, and finals night will move to the marquee at Ebrington Square, specially built for City of Culture events.

“We expect to see the likes of Olympians Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon entering the competition as well as our own local senior boxers. Many coaches will use these championships as a baseline for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and will be keen to get their top boxers on that selection sheet, so a big entry is expected.”

The championships start on Monday, January 21, 2013 and will run until the Friday.

There will be a challenge match between County Derry and County Antrim to be held at The DuPont Rec Club on Friday, December 7, as part of the board’s annual presentations show.

More details and ticket prices will follow, but in the meantime, boxing fans in the North West should add these dates to their diary.
