Ulster Select boxer Lewis all set for Titanic show down

Coleraine teenager Lewis Napier is going from strength to strength.

The 15-year-old Dunluce School pupil, who boxes for Ballymoney’s Scorpion Boxing Club, is the only local boxer to be selected for the Ulster squad to face the USA next month in the illustrious setting of the Titanic Centre, Belfast.

Lewis who boxes in the 51kg category, has already faced the might of the United States when he travelled to Washington DC earlier this year with the Ulster squad, winning his bout in style and he will be hoping to ‘do the double’ when he comes up against the same opponent in a tasty re-match on November 14th.

Coach Alan ‘Spike’ Martin commented: “Lewis boxed in America and he boxed very well, and I would expect him to produce an equally good performance again. He’s boxing very, very well at the moment.

“This is part of the Belfast-Beltway Boxing Project which is a Washington D.C. based non-profit organization who bring children from all sides of the community in Northern Ireland together and give them an opportunity.

“Each year ten are selected to go to Washington and they get to visit The White House, The FBI building etc and there are some very influential people who sit on the board of this charity. It’s a pretty big deal over there and I’m involved in the selection of the squads who travel there.

“Lewis is boxing very well. When he travelled to America with the Ulster squad he was mixing with guys who have been to the European championships and a guy who has been to the Commonwealth Games, its great for his development because he is involved with a high pool of talent.

“If you are going to progress in a sport you need to mix it at the top level.

“He is seeing how all these guys prepare and the way they think. He has made many good friends on the trip to America and now he is getting the opportunity to box at the Titanic Centre and this is the first time there has ever been a boxing match at the Centre so its a big event.

“Lewis is also going to Bradford on 28th to box against England which will be a tough but another very good experience for him. The English lads came to Northern Ireland earlier in the year and we will be travelling there with a lot of local lads from both Scorpion Boxing Club but also Churchlands Golden Gloves in Coleraine.

After that he will be boxing in the Ulster Nine Counties which is at the end of November so this will be great preparation for him

Commenting about his up an coming fight, Lewis a pupil at Dunluce said: “I loved the exchange program because it was an amazing experience.

“It was made all the better by sharing it with a great bunch of guys. I made some awesome friends and have some amazing memories. The Belfast-Beltway Boxing Project is awesome and I can’t wait for November 14th to get back in the ring and represent Ulster against the USA.”
