Braidmen notch fourth successive league win

Ballymena maintained their position at the top of Division 2A of the Ulster Bank All-Ireland League after a 21-6 home win over Old Wesley on Saturday.

For the second week running the elements were against both teams as they disrupted the flow if the game.

In torrential rain Ballymena took the game to the visitors running the ball deep into there half.

The Braidmen’s forwards were knocking the much bigger Old Wesley pack back with every drive.

It wasn’t long before flanker Michael Entwhistle crashed over for the opening try for Ballymena.

Timmy Small slotted the ball through the uprights to make the score 7-0.

Ballymena had the momentum going forward and on 30 minutes scrum half Dave Shanahan showed great feet to dance away from would be tacklers to race under the posts.

Timmy Small made it two conversions from two to make it 14-0.

Just before half time the Braidmen gave away a couple of quick penalties that the old Wesley Outhalf kicked. The half time score was 14-6.

The second half started but this time it was Old Wesley that came shooting out of the starting blocks.

For about 30 minutes of this half Old Wesley dominated play and possession.

The smaller Ballymena team stood strong and tackled bravely bringing wave after wave if attack to an end. With time running out and a rare second half venture into the Old Wesley half the ball found its way to second row Conner Smyth who could not be stopped as he crossed the line for the games final try.

Timmy Small kept his 100 per cent record by kicking his third conversion bringing the final score to 21-6.

This was a great victory for the young side who showed great team work in attack and defence to keep a very experienced Old Wesley side out.

The First XV will now take a well deserved break this weekend before they get back into action against Banbridge.
