Brendan emerges victorious in Marcus Memorial competition

The competition was kindly sponsored by Smallcost Carpets, where David had worked for many years, and the winner was Brendan McCann.

Playing off a handicap of 20, he produced a total of 44 points, two clear of his nearest challenger.

Brendan didn’t have the best of starts as he dropped five shots over the opening four holes but he made his mark with four pars and a bogey to reach the turn with 22 points and that total was replicated on the back nine which he played in four pars, four bogeys and a double concession at the 12th.

Second place was taken by Paul Creevy who, with a shot on handicap at each hole, notched up 42 points from two equal nines of 21 points.

Paul scored four pars and two bogeys while the fifth was a double bogey and worse followed at the sixth where a triple bogey produced no points, yet he completed the front nine with a birdie and two pars. The second nine commenced with three pars and a bogey and after double bogeys at 14 and 15 and he completed his round with two pars and a bogey.

Noel Totten (10) was third nett with a better last three hole points total from Peter Smith and a better second nine total from Steven Thompson. Noel scored a birdie on the opening hole for four points only to drop five shots to par over the next five holes and he completed his front nine with two pars and a bogey for 18 points but his back nine was much better with seven pars and two bogeys adding a further 21 points.

Fourth nett was Peter Smith (17), who missed out on third over the final three holes. He had 18 points on the way out despite a non-score on the sixth.

The homeward nine holes saw a trio apiece of pars and bogeys, two double bogeys and a birdie at the 15th, which was worth fourth points on its own.

His second nine was three points ahead of Steven Thompson who, off a 17 handicap, produced a steady first nine where he registered five bogeys and four pars which equated to 21 points. The first four holes on the back nine cost him five shots while the next five saw him score two pars, two bogeys plus a double bogey at the 17th for a further 18 points.

Sixth nett was Maurice Wylie (17) with a total of 38 points after each nine produced 19 points. Maurice’s card contained seven pars, seven bogeys and four double bogeys.

The best gross card came from four handicapper Sean McGarry who played the course in four over par 72 shots. He opened his round with two pars followed by a trio of bogeys and he completed his first nine with four pars. The second nine saw Sean par the 10th, bogey the 11th and then complete his round with seven pars on the trot.
