A first-ever major medal in Irish hockey history was achieved thanks to success in the play-off match against the host nation by 4-2.

Ireland enjoyed a group win against France before losing to Olympic champions Germany and securing a draw with Belgium. The semi-final finished in defeat to the Netherlands.
