BROTHERS THRIVING ON THE PRESSURE

The brothers are joined in the GB squad for the Brandenburg competition next month by fellow Coleraine rowers Alan Campbell and Joel Cassells.

The selection is a big indicator for the Rio Olympics with Richard will join Will Fletcher in the Doubles, Peter will be in the Lightweight Four and Alan with once again compete in the Single Sculls.

Joel suffered abit of a set back as he was named in the non-Olympic Lightweight Pairs, but he is determined tro keep fighting all the way.

So too are the Chambers’ brothers, who despite their Euro selection, are determined to keep pushing themselves all the way.

“I think pressure comes from within, and from ourselves,” Richard told Times Sport.

“I think in terms of selection this year it has probably been a little bit less so because Will and I formed ourselves as a really good double last year.

“The coaches and the performance staff have the confidence in us to allow us to carry that project on.

“So really through the winter training camps and the training we’ve had the time in the Double which we didn’t necessarily have last year, the pressure from that has been off, but because we’ve been given that fresh leash just to get on with it they are giving us every opportunity they can to go and be Olympic champions.

“So that’s a different kind of pressure.”

Peter knows the Lightweight Four will have to step up to the mark after a disappointing 2015. But he feels they are getting back to their best.

“The Lightweight four squad had a really good winter, it was very competitive,” said Peter.

“That’s what it needed to bring it back to the standard at what it was always at.

“It hit a low last year, but we have taken it by the head and really gone for it this year, there’s a real positive in that.

“I think the four who have been selected now have a point to prove. There’s a big question which needs to be answered. It’s the same four guys so is it going to be the same performance as last year?

“Yes it’s the four same guys, but I think individually we are all in a better place.

“We all ask questions of ourselves and one of those is how is it going to be better?

“We’ve been able to put last year behind us by what we’ve done this winter, there’s confidence because we’ve done some really good stuff.

“We’ve posted times from back in the glory days and hopefully that will be shown in Brandenburg.”
