Broughshane to meet Michelin in League Cup final

THE LEAGUE Cup final has been reached and the contestants will be Michelin and Broughshane Playing Fields A team.

The Michelin team will be going out to complete their third win on the trot and their sixth in total.

The Broughshane team on the other hand will by trying to record their first League cup win since the year 2008 and having won it ten times since 1983.

In their semi final with the Ballymena United Social Club the Knockan Road side had a deficit of nine shots from the away leg at the Slemish Drive venue but they had retrieved only two shots from the first half where Alan Cahoon’s rink scored a three shot victory over David Elliott’s unit. The visitors replied with a single shot win from Stephen Shields over Doran Turtle leaving the advantage with the social club by seven shots which left the game still in the balance.

The second half was a different scenario as the home teams rinks, in the hands of the Morrison brothers and their teams rinks did the business with William’s rink recovering four shots, having won by same against Bryan Magrath. The deciding rink was skipped by the ‘A’ teams David Morrison who despatched Jonathan Millar by twelve shots to five, which put the Knockan Road based team into the final, where they will meet defending champion Michelin.

The Woodside Road based team had what looked to be a tough rink at next door neighbours Golf Club as the Mich had managed only a single shot lead from their home leg.

Another day is another fame and so it turned out to be as following the end of the first half two games the visitors had increased their lead to sixteen shots, the result of a twelve shot victory by Grant Robinson’s rink against Johnny Jamieson’s rink.

On the other mat Wesley Caldwell’s troop were dealing with David McCullough’s unit, ending up with a three shot victory which left the visitors with a lead of sixteen shots entering the second half. The second two games were going quite well for the ‘Golfers’ that was until Sean McGarry’s dropped a four plus a five in their game with Mathew Boyd who eventually won by five shots.

The other home rink in the hands of Jonathan Lynn ended up with a sound win of eleven shots against Graham Wilson but the cup final place was Michelin’s by ten shots.

The final of the knock-out will be between B.I.B.C and Portglenone Community Centre following comprehensive wins against Eaton Park and 1st Ballymena respectively. The B.I.B.C’s four rinks ran up a total of sixty nine shots against twenty plus the ten handicap score allowance.

Danny McCullough had a ten shot victory over Bomar Hill while Tommy Hill had a resounding win against John Carruthers by twenty nine shots and really the game was over as far as the ‘Park’ were concerned. The second pair of games resulted in a thirteen shot win for Roy Torrington while son David had a close game against Ruth Kelly’s rink where the end result was a nine shot to six win for Kelly, which gave the Eaton Park side something to celebrate.

The other semi-final at 1st Ballymena resulted in the visiting Portglenone C.C team win in all four games for rinks skipped by Gerard McLarnon who won by twelve against Lyle McQuitty while Jim Gaul’s rink won by seven against David McQuitty.

After the tea break Joe McErlean outscored Mat McPrake by thirteen and to complete the set Eamon Cassley had an eight shot margin of victory against I Graham. This leaves a very interesting final at Eaton Park on Monday, March 25 and the cup final also at Eaton Park on Wednesday, March 27.
