Brown’s Bann could teach UCD a lesson

Banbridge’s Peter Brown is hopeful he’ll be returning to Dublin this weekend ito haunt his former side.

Brown spent last season at UCD before moving back to Havelock during the summer amid a mass exodus from the Leinster side.

That has left UCD fighting for their lives in the league with just one win from six. Banbridge, who are unbeaten so far this season then, could well make light work of their opponents in this weekend’s IHL fixture.

“It’ll be nice to get down and see a few of the guys from down there but most of them have moved on,” he said.

“They have a pretty new team because I think there were only a couple of our team that stayed.

“There was just a lot of guys saying “if you leave, I’ll leave” and then it happened that a few of us left and it sort of fell apart.

“I think we’re definitely favourites going into it because they’ve had such a tough start and are fighting relegation in the league.

“They’re also playing Inter-Varsities at the minute so they’ll be busy.

“If we go down there and play the way we can, we should win but we still have to do the job.”

Bann got their IHL campaign off to perfect start earlier this month, thrashing Cork CoI 5-0 in the opening group game.

That’s just one in a long line of impressive results.

“I am really enjoying being back, especially because we’re playing so well as a team,” said Brown.

“That suits me as a midfielder because we have to keep the ball for large periods of the games.

“In the middle, I get a lot of the ball so that’s pretty good from my point of view. I’m happy enough with how things have been going for me personally and how I have been playing.

“Mark (Tumilty - Bann Head Coach) is great. He knows exactly what is needed and the training sessions are harder than they have ever been.

“I think this is as fit as we’ve ever been as a group of players so we’re in good shape at the minute.”

Banbridge are taking a supporters’ bus to Saturday’s game in Dublin, which passes-back at 3pm.
