Bumper Easter of golfing action at Raceview

GOLFERS at Ballymena Golf Club enjoyed a bumper bonanza over Easter with three days of competition.

On the Saturday, 166 members teed off in dry conditions in the Walter Young Mazda competition.

The winning score came from six-handicapper Paddy Kearney who had a nett 62 but he had to depend on a better second nine from Campbell Wade.

Kearney’s front nine was made up with seven pars and a dropped shot on the sixth which he retrieved with a birdie on the ninth.

The second nine was was a similar story with seven more pars, a dropped shot on 11 and a birdie on the par three 16th for a level par gross round.

Wade (14) started with a bogey followed by eight straight pars but his second nine – which consisted of five bogeys, three pars and a double bogey – was a different scenario, but he still finished two shots ahead of Eugene M Reid.

He claimed third place by virtue of a better second nine from Chris Magee (5) and Ivan Hamilton (20).

The final nett prize was won by David Mulholland (11) who had equal nines of four over.

The best gross score came from John Robinson (scratch) who played the course in level par 68 shots.

A front nine of four pars, three bogeys and birdies on the fourth and sixth were added to on the back nine with six pars, a dropped shot at 16 plus birdies at 13 and 15.

EASTER SUNDAY

John Brown showed the way in the Easter Sunday open stableford with a total of 39 points.

Playing off 12, John commenced his round par, birdie, par only to follow with four dropped shots on the next four holes but he managed to birdie the eighth and par the ninth for 22 points out.

He only had three pars on the back nine, along with five bogeys and he failed to score on the last hole but he still managed to pip Paddy Kearney by one point.

Kearney, whose handicap had been cut from six to five, followed up his win the previous day with runners-up spot this time and it could have been back-to-back wins but for a triple bogey at the 13th.

Third nett came Jake Carson (12) with a total of 38 points on a better second nine.

Gary Black took the best gross prize with a two over total of 70 shots, from 14 pars, three bogeys and a lone birdie on the 14th.

EASTER MONDAY

The Monday competition was won by Chris McCrory (13) with a total of 40 points, of which the first nine yielded 19 points.

Second place went to scratch handicapper John Robinson with 36 points, which included a non-score on the 12th.
