CAI First XV prove to be too strong for Regents House

Regent regrouped well and pressured the Inst line with several phases, however, with committed defence from Kieran Burns and Oliver Mcdowell this allowed the visiters to secure a turn over. Coleraine worked their way up the pitch and strong running from Thomas Pethick proved to be too much for the Regent defence and he scored in the corner, the conversion was missed.

The last attack of the first half came from a set piece move from a Coleraine scrum, the backlines handling proved to be slick for the defence and Luke Scott burst through the defence showing great strength to the score in the corner. the conversion was slotted from Callum Smith who kept his nerve.

Coleraine started the second half strongly scoring three tries early on, one of these was created by Johnny Crowe who showed the dummy and a flash of pace down the wing and put away Bradley Dempster for a juicy try. Joel Stanbridge proved to be a rock in defence turning over ball and putting boys on their back. Regent’s heads dropped and CAI began to apply the pressure, Mark Gordon showed a real deal turn of pace down the wing which was recycled which allowed Callum Smith to score near the corner. Callum held his nerve and struck the ball with intent which went straight through the middle of the uprights. When the final whistle was blown Coleraine were the victors 52-0.

Meanwhile, Regent put up some early resistance playing strong rugby in the middle of the pitch, but could not handle pressure from CAI IIs fowards. Adam Alexander ran in the first try of the game after excellent work from the fowards who set up an overlap, which the backs took full advantage of. Sam Beattie added the extra two points.

From the restart Marcus McKeag gathered well and play went through several phases with the forwards again working well. Pressure eventually told on the home side and Regent conceded a penalty, which CAI took full advantage. A solid scrum led to an eight pick up by George McKeag which set up Scott Greatorex for a pick and go over the line. Sam Beattie added the conversion.

From the kick off CAI eventually won another penalty and opted for a scrum which had been dominant in the first half. The pack again secured good scrum ball the ball was moved along the backs to Andrew Wisner who broke the Regent line and offloaded to Paddy Chambers who ran in beside the posts for the try. Sam Beattie converted once again.

CAI started the second half the way they ended the first. After some big hits from George McKeag and Craig McKinney, Kyle Graham won the turnover from a ruck which set up the backs for another attack. The ball was fed out wide to Peter Bonar, who drew the man and set up Alross Alejo to score his try.

After this try Regent rallied but some excellent defence by CAI once again stole possession. Sam Beattie had an excellent game at 10 and once again moved the ball well from source which set up space for the backs to play with. An excellent move lead to Niall Cameron ran a great line and broke through the Regent defensive to score a great try in the corner.

In the next passage of play Regent were handed a consolation try when CAI spilled the ball from a kick and failed to gather allowing the regent winger to run in a simple try.

CAI responded straight away with Peter Bonar scoring from the restart kick. He gathered a ball which bounced favourably for CAI to power through two Regent fowards and add his name to the list of scorers.

From the restart Andrew Moore gathered the ball like a raging bull, powered past some Regent forwards then stepped the fullback and scored an amazing try under their posts. Sam added the conversion leaving the final score at 43-5 in CAI’s favour.

Coleraine Inst Medallion took the field in Newtonards on Saturday in a fixture that would prove to be an excellent challenge against a strong and abrasive Regent House Medallion. A nervous start from the coleraine boys allowed for Regent House’s scrumhalf to make a sharp break down the blindside an open the score 5-0.

Wakening the CAI team into life, strong forward play from Cavan Taylor and Matthew Christie enabled quick ball for Matthew Lydon and Zak Hutchinson to set the backline alight.

Taking play into Regent’s own 22m line the CAI pack began to assert its dominance. Jordan carried strong aggressive ball, breaking down the defence, creating Insts first score through quicking thinking from Peter Weisner crossing the line under the posts. Zak Hutchinson converting the kick.

With the blustery wind blowing into the Inst teams faces, CAI began to keep ball in hand instead of the kicking for territory.

A complete performance from the coleraine pack, the boys dominated their opponents scrum and Zak Hutchinson was able to control the game with strong support from Thomas lavery and Daniel McCreadie in the centers.

The second score of the game came from excellent continuity from the team 1 to 15, offloading out of the tackle, creating space for the pacey wing Luca McClelland to finish in the corner. Ali Telford with a fantastic conversion.

The final score of the match came from No.8 Peter Weisner who peeled of a few tackles to cross the line after strong running lines from James Millsop, Jonny Booth and Jack Kilgore. Conversion missed.

The Under-14 Bs put in a magnificent performance to beat Regent House As.

First half tries from skipper Varun Chopra, Warren McKessik, Max Baille and Edwin Guan gave Inst a 20-5 lead at half time. Max then added a second try just after half time to secure a fantastic win.

The Under13 A’s produced an excellent team performance which resulted in an 11 try rout of Regent House.

The boys dominated every facet of play and from the moment Jonty Callaghan touched down in the second minute the result was never in question.

The Under-13 B’s bounced back brilliantly from last weeks disappointing result with a 54-0 demolition of Regent House.

Right from the first whistle CAI dominated every aspect of the game and were both professional and clinical in their play.
