CAI perform well at Ulster Championships

At the recent Ulster Schools Swimming Championships which took place in Ballymena, the CAI team performed very well indeed, both in the team relays and in the individual events.

The junior squad of Niall Evans, Adam Dixon-Freeburn, Ross Moore and Ben Scott put in good performances in both freestyle and medley relays. Considering that this team is made up of two year 8 and two year 9 swimmers competing in the under 14 age-group, their performance was very promising for the future.

The intermediate relay squad of Michael Evans, Oliver McDowell, James Richardson and Thomas Kelly combined to claim gold medals in both the freestyle and medley relays, continuing the winning trend of CAI’s intermediate team in recent years.

In the individual races Michael Evans swam very well to finish in fourth place in both the freestyle and butterfly finals and Alistair Telfer gained a new personal best time in the 200m Individual Medley. James Richardson, a member of the Irish Schools’ international squad, put in a blistering performance to take gold by a margin of nearly two seconds in the 100m backstroke event. In the 100m freestyle final, both James and Dungannon’s Callum Baine dipped under the 54 second mark, smashing the long-standing Ulster Schools’ record in the process, and James was just pipped at the post into the silver medal position in the most hotly contested final of the day. Since then, however, James has regained his title as the fastest junior 100m freestyle swimmer with a time of 53.04 seconds at the recent Ulster Championships.

CAI’s year 8 and 9 swimmers are now turning their attention towards the Ulster Minor Schools Championships which take place in January and where they will be hoping for further success in both the individual and team events.
