Calling all runners and fun runners to the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre on July 25 for the Annual 5 Mile Road Race and Children’s Fun Run.

Organisers, Ballymoney Sports Development Unit in partnership with Springwell Running Club are delighted and indebted to announce that Balllyrashane Creameries have come on board as the new sponsors on this year’s event. The 5 mile road race begins at 7.30pm with a whopping twenty individual categories.

“It promises to be another great event with categories for everyone and prizes the whole way down the field, so there is no excuse not to turn up and give it a go,” said Sports Development Manager, John Fall.

The full list of categories are as follows, open male and female, veterans section for males over 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 veterans sections for females over 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 junior race for male and female15+ and wheelchair race for male and females.

The race has attracted great numbers in past years with 170 finishers in 2013 and this year should be no different.

Kenny Bacon of Springwell Running Club said: “Preparationhas gone really smoothly this year and I am delighted to continue our excellent partnership with Ballymoney Borough Council’s Sports Development Unit.

“Their input is invaluable to ensure the event is a success. A special prize is on offer for anyone beating any of the current course records.”

The evening’s activities kick off from 6pm and everyone is welcome to attend and support the runners. The new Mayor, Councilor Bill Kennedy will start the race at 7.30pm from the Garryduff Road. The first finishers will be expected back inside 25 minutes to have a chance at the course record. Spectators will be entertained by local Knight Walkers Entertainment during this time.

Prior to the main event, the children’s fun run will take place at 6.15pm again at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre. The race will take place in the grounds of the centre and is open to anyone aged 8 -14. 8 – 11year olds run 1000 metres and 12 – 14 year olds run 1500 metres.

Note that entry costs £3-00 per child and NO entries will be accepted without a Parental/Guardian consent form.

“This is the 10th year of the children’s event and we would encourage all children from the Borough to come along and take part. Every child will receive a medal for competing,” commented John Fall.
