Callum set for UK School Games

Volleyball player, Callum Currie (17) from Ballymoney has been selected to compete on behalf of Northern Ireland at the 2011 Sainsbury’s UK School Games in Sheffield.

Callum will compete against the UK’s school-aged elite in the volleyball events being held at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, from 1 – 4 September.

A delighted Callum said: “After being told I would be competing at these Games I was thrilled because it has given me another chance to represent my country against the best England, Scotland and Wales can offer.

“The Games in 2010 highlighted to me the standard that young people can achieve and how this type of competition can push athletes to aim higher and expect more from themselves.”

Great Britain Volleyball and professional player, Nathan French, commented on the selection: “I would like to applaud Callum for his selection on behalf of Northern Ireland in the Sainsbury’s UK School Games.

“The Games offer the chance for Callum to demonstrate his obvious talent on a wonderful stage and to see how he compares against the very best in his age-group. Away from the competition, I’m sure Callum will enjoy meeting different athletes from all corners of the UK who share the same dreams and aspirations as he does.

“I wish Callum the best of luck and I’m certain he will prosper from his time at the Sainsbury’s UK School Games.”

Over 1,600 elite school aged athletes will compete across 12 sports including disability events in four sports from 1 – 4 September 2011 as part of the Sainsbury’s UK School Games. The multi-sport event is delivered by the Youth Sport Trust and designed to replicate a major championships with Opening and Closing Ceremonies and an Athletes’ Village.
