Campbell hoping it will be third time lucky

When he lines out in London he will be taking part in his third Games, but he will be hoping for better results than in Athens and Beijing in 2000 and 2004 respectively.

Eight years ago he was part of the quadruple sculls that qualified late in the day while last time around his campaign was blighted by illness and injury.

“This is what I’ve been training for and thankfully there have been no last minute surprises and I’m very excited about being selected to my third Olympics,” said Campbell.

“It’s been a long journey but the thing is I don’t just want to be known as a three-time Olympian, I want to be an Olympic medalist this time.

“I was very young in Athens and I wasn’t expected to get into the team at that point.

“It was a really special thing to be in there.

“In Beijing I was breaking new ground in the single sculls because it was in 1924 that Great Britain last won a gold medal in the event and at that point everything was looking good and then I had the illness and the knee infection and that was hugely disappointing.

“This time it’s not a case of the pressure is on but there are higher expectations after winning medals at the last three world championships and I’m going to London for a medal and I definitely feel I have a chance of winning that gold medal as well.”

GB Rowing Team Performance Director David Tanner spoke at Windsor on Wednesday of Britain’s Games’ ambitions to equal the tally of six medals won in Beijing.

He will be eyeing Munich as a final staging post for a team which he has described as “certainly the strongest team the GB Rowing Team has ever put on the water thanks to unparalleled investment from the National Lottery over the past four years”.

All the GB crews have now been fully selected for London 2012 bar the men’s eight and the women’s eight.
