Campbell 'simmering' ahead of World Championships

ALAN Campbell's coach, Bill Barry, says the single sculler's preparation is going well ahead of the World Championships in New Zealand next month.

Campbell was named in the GB squad alongside fellow Coleraine rowers Richard and Peter Chambers for the trip to Lake Karipiro as he bids to stave off the challenge of Mahe Drysdale in his own backyard.

And Bill Barry is in confident mood ahead of the competition.

"It's been a pretty good season and with this extended time to New Zealand we kind of treated it as a mini season of its own," revealed the experienced coach.

"We've built up the strength, moved to power and now over these last couple of weeks we'll concentrate on hitting top speed, because it's very important to peak for the race and not before your time.

"Alan is simmering at the minute, not boiling over."

Alan admitted Bill's judgement is vital coming in to these final weeks of preparation.

"That's why Bill is the coach and not me as I just want to go flat out all the time," he joked.

"But I'm in full form and full swing and I'm really looking forward to the World Championships as is Bill."
