Carnfunnock hosts testing handicap race

Larne Athletic Club’s Irene Beattie was the winner on Boxing Day as club members and guests ran off the turkey in the traditional Carnfunnock Handicap Race.

This was the third event in this year’s Larne Athletic Clubs’s Handicap Race Series sponsored by Chekkers Winebar.

The 4.3 mile race for the Burton Shield started in Drain’s Bay, and with the two figure-eight laps through Carnfunnock Country Park taking in the infamous steps each time, it was a testing run so soon after Christmas Day.

Irene was one of the first to start on what is a very familiar course to her as a regular Larne Parkrun participant.

She ran steadily, eventually finishing first with a minute to spare over second placed Gary Montgomery.

John Agnew, recently returned from injury, finished third with Laura Simpson fourth for the second race in a row.

David Murphy and Evelyn Cooke finished fifth and sixth respectively while James McIlroy moved through the field from 39th to seventh and recorded the fastest time of the day in 26:16.

Kerry Fokkens was fastest lady in 34:35. Congratulations also to all those who took part in the kid’s races organized earlier in the morning.

Larne Athletic Club would like to extend its thanks to Bernard Brady and Rhonda Brady for setting the handicap times and for timekeeping, Geraldine Hastings for organizing prizes and for the tea, coffee and food afterwards and to all those who assisted with entries, timekeeping, marshalling or in any other way.
