Caroline shines on marathon debut in Dublin

FLEDGLING Ballymena athlete Caroline Flanaghan emphasised her athletic prowess with a fine debut marathon performance in Dublin last Monday.

Caroline was part of a record field of over 14000 runners who tackled the 2011 National Lottery sponsored Dublin City Marathon.

The 22 year old musician who was running to raise funds for Ballymena’s George Sloan centre took the event in her stride as she cruised home in a fantastic time of 4hours 5mins 24sec to claim 104th spot in the female open race.

Speaking after the event Caroline explained “I just went out to enjoy the day and savour the atmosphere and the support of the crowds along the route. It was tough for the last 3 miles but the long Sunday morning runs with the running club and the gym sessions helped get me to the finish line.

Caroline now plans a couple of easy weeks of recovery before resuming training and getting back to the fun of training with her Fitness First Clubmates again.

Meanwhile Caroline’s clubmate Mark Montgomery is currently fine tuning for the Athens Marathon next weekend. Club coach Gregory Walsh joked the pressure is now on Mark to match or better Caroline’s time.
