Carrick Grammar athlete Christian is on the right track

On the back of a staggering season, Carrick Grammar athlete Christian Robinson is now preparing to represent Ireland at the Combined Events Schools’ International in the new Commonwealth Stadium in Glasgow in December. During 2012, he competed for both Ulster and Ireland and, in between, he managed to break for school records in the 100m, triple jump, long jump and 400m.

His season began back in February when he was called up to the NI team trials. That was the springboard for selection for the UK Schools’ Games which was held in the Olympic Stadium.

In May he finished first in the intermediate long jump (6.03m), and triple jump (12.45m) at the Ulster Schools’ competition. This led to the Irish Schools’ meet in Tullamore where he finished third in the triple jump.

He went on to take part in the Tailteann Inter-Provincial Games where he came second in the triple jump earning him his first opportunity to represent Ireland.

In July, he competed in Kent at the Schools’ International, producing his best performance to date jumping 13.15m to come third overall in the triple jump.

More success was to come in September when, with under a month’s training, he finished first at the Ulster Schools’ Combined Events with a score of 3248. Next up was the Irish Schools’ Combined Events - a competition in which he produced several personal bests. He registered a 1.75m high jump; he ran the 100m hurdles in 15.2s, and the 200m in 23.6s - both into a headwind. He completed the 800m (2mins 15.3 secs) and finished third overall.

Everyone at Carrickfergus Grammar School wishes Christian continuing success this season.
