James Carson was pleased with the way his first game in charge went. “We had a squad of 30 players for Saturday so that gave us the opportunity to look at as many as possible. The boys have been training hard but its not the same as watching them in a game situation.

“Myself and the other coaches, richard Beggs and Chris Cochrane were quite happy with the performance. We asked for them to be quite intense and dogged and to be reasonably organised in defence which they were.

“We need to be a bit better when we get in to the green zone as far as scoring tries is concerned but it was only the first game of the season and it gives us something to work on.

“We have a few more pre-season games before the league starts and we will use them to iron out any issues that might arise. We are seeing what works and who’s working and trying to get that bit of continuity and consistency brought into the play.

“We didn’t conceed any tries on Saturday which is pretty positive and if you want to do well in the league then you have to defend well.

“As far as the coaching staff were concerned we were quite pleased with the effort.

“It’s the one things about the squad, they want to learn and want to get better and they doi anything that’s asked of them.

“We play Limavady on Thursday night at Kilraught’s Road. that will be another challenge for us. Last Saturday was the first rung of the ladder and I want them to step up another rung each time they play. It’s about continuing to improve and leaning from each game.”
