Causeway Cycling Club is the leader of the pack

As the first year of Causeway Cycle Club draws to a close Chairman Robert Downes used the opportunity to thank all club members, and especially the hard working committee, for their sterling efforts this year.

The club was formed with the idea that all abilities should be catered for but even the most optimistic of the founders couldn’t have foreseen the amazing success that the year has brought.

Founded with the ethos that cyclists of all abilities can be catered for in a cycling club Causeway CC now boasts in excess of 100 members. The large numbers the club can attract has been a feature of the Irish sportive scene and the distinctive and stylish club kit has been seen this year in events such as the Belfast-Dublin-Belfast Maracycle, Inishowen 100 and The Giant Killer.

This coupled with the great support given to other local clubs’ fundraising events has seen the club take a role as one of the prominent clubs in local cycling.

Causeway CC takes its responsibilities seriously as a part of the local community and has been integral in raising funds and helping out local charities this year. A partnership with the Coleraine Blind Centre helps participants enjoy the freedom and fitness benefits associated with tandem cycling as well as developing new friendships and the club has supported Coleraine’s own Caring Caretaker throughout the year, including helping to organise his annual charity cycle.

The main beneficiary of funds this year has been the local Causeway Hospital which, along with thousands of pounds raised, also benefited from a large delivery of Easter Eggs for the children’s ward. The smiles on that day made everything worthwhile. And that was just from the nursing staff.

The club members are determined to build on this initial success and would encourage absolutely anyone who has an interest in getting fit and making new friends to come and join them. With three ability groups on a Sunday and a ‘no-one gets left behind’ philosophy the club is the place to be.

Group rides depart at Costa Coffee on Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 and the mountain bike group has a weekly run departing the same venue at 6pm.

Why not come along and be part of Northern Ireland’s fastest growing cycling club? There is a warm welcome for everyone and next year will be an even greater success than this. As the club motto states; Let the good time roll.
