Causeway Judo Club look forward to another fantastic year!

AS 2011 starts, the members of the Causeway Judo club are already back on the mats training to make this year as good as the last!

2010 was another great year for the Ballymoney based club who added a number of regional and national titles to their ever growing list of victories.

The year also saw 2 Dan grades (black belts) and 3 level 1 coaches being added to the clubs' membership and a host of successes and progressions at the grading events as well.

One of the highlights of the year for Judo was Paul Little who is new to Judo winning his category in the Northwest Open event and starting his Judo career in style.

Davy Michael had a fantastic year winning medals at the Northern Ireland and Irish Opens and is tipped for big things in the future.

The club also added a new sport to its training options with wrestling being an additional yet also a very beneficial crossover to Judo.

The club in its first year had massive success in the discipline.

They can now boast two British Champions and also a 2nd Place in the British Championships in the sport as well.

Head Coach Alan Ashcroft said: "We're primarily a Judo club but like to think we're forward thinking in our approach as we look to crossover in sports to see if anything else can give us a competitive edge.

"Wrestling is also an Olympic sport and gives you an excellent knowledge of ground control movement which is also key in Judo. The two sports compliment themselves very well, but for me it's fantastic that we have had success in everything we have entered and competed in.

I'd like to say well done to all the members both young and old for 2010 as they all put a lot of effort into making the club what it is."

The club celebrated its year in style with a review of the year with special commendation awards given out to members who had an exceptional year personally. This was followed by a big function that included a Christmas Dinner at the Nook restaurant which was enjoyed by everyone that went.

For 2011 the club is opening its doors to new members and anyone is welcome to come along on a Tuesday or Thursday evening in the Castle Community Centre for Judo. Wrestling takes place on a Saturday in Ballybogy.
