Caw continue to struggle

Caw...0

CAW took on Donemana on Saturday in another must win game, but the Waterside men suffered their second defeat in as many games as their Second Division title push starts to falter.

Having lost 2-1 to fellow title contenders Ardmore last Thursday evening, they dropped into second spot in the table behind rivals Newbuildings United Reserves following the weekend defeat.

The home side were a little shakey at the start and gave away an early penalty when Ross was judged to have brought down the Donemana striker in the box; young Ricky Lee Doherty stepped up to take the spot kick but it was saved by Ross in the Caw goals.

Caw started to get find their rythmn and were passing the ball well and Donemana were finding it hard to deal with the pace that Caw had upfront and they gave away a free-kick on the edge of their box when Kyle Armstrong was pulled down. But Cargill’s effort forced the Donemana keeper into a fine save.

Approaching the end of the second half Caw were well in the driving seat and didn't want the half to end, but it did at 0-0.

Caw created a few half chances in early stages of the second half but nothing clear-cut until they won a corner on 60 minutes.

The ball was crossed into the box and found the head of Caw's centre half Jonny Lath who was sure he had scored but Donemana cleared off the line.

Young Conor Kelpie had a fine game with several good chances, the best of which saw him turn three men inside out but his curling shot fizzed just over the bar.

The game looked as if it was heading for a draw when Caw won another corner; this time the cross again found Lath who had a free header but couldn't get over it enough and it skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Five minutes from time a Caw defender made the mistake of trying to beat a man in his own half and he lost the ball, young Ashley Buchanan went on and scored to put the visitors infront.

The game ended 0-1 and Caw were removed from top spot in the league by Newbuildings United Reserves who are now two points clear with a game in hand.

Caw gave their all in this game, each and every player gave all they could possible give, but once again silly mistakes were the downfall for the men from ’The Drive’.
