Celebrations at Armoy Rugby Club awards

ARMOY Rugby Club held their annual dinner in the clubrooms on Saturday, May 1 with a large attendance of members and friends.

The club were in buoyant mood this year after finishing a creditable third in the Minor North East League.

Captain Gareth Christie reflected the upbeat mood in his speech in which he praised the players for putting in great effort this season as well as having the support of a hard-working committee.

Gareth revealed that membership was up and that they looked forward to a new season in which it is hoped the club will do even better.

Chairman, Francis Douthart, stressed that the challenge of maintaining high standards and keeping the club in a good financial position were paramount.

President, Maurice Christie also spoke and added his congratulations to all for making it an excellent season.

During the presentations, special mention was made of former secretary, Brooke Huey, who received a gift in recognition for his contribution to the club as an official for some 20 years.

There was also a surprise presentation to Tom Christie who has been on the playing staff for some 35 years. His son, Gareth, took some pride in presenting his dad with a specially engraved watch marking the occasion.

Guest speaker was the inimitable, Carl Monteith, who had the audience in fits of laughter with some well-chosen jokes and anecdotes. No club official escaped the sharp wit of Mr. Monteith!
