Celtic win on penalty kicks

THE third trophy of the Summer League was contested last Friday evening between the Celtic Club Lurgan No.1 and Kilwilkie Athletic.

It was a very eagerly contested match, played in great spirit, with the Celtic Club eventually running out 5-4 winners on penalty kicks.

Celtic were the first to open the scoring when Stevie McConville netted. Kilwikie were not overawed and pushed forward at every opportunity with Emmet McAreavey and young Lewsley causing the Celtic Club all sorts of problems.

They eventually equalised just before the half but a lapse in concentration allowed Paul Towe in to score and put Celtic back into a half time lead.

Celtic ‘s manager had some strong words for the team at half-time but it was Kilwilkie who took the early initative in the second half as they fought back into the game and it was no more than they deserved when they again equalised.

With the score now at 2-2 the game went into extra time with both teams giving their all. After a goalmouth scramble the ball broke to a Kilwilkie player who calmly slotted home to put Kilwilkie into a 3-2 lead.

Credit must also go to the Celtic Club who never gave up and they continued in search of the goal that would bring this match to penalties which duly arrived with just five minutes to go. A mix up by the Kilwilkie goalkeeper allowed Stevie McConville to nip in and steal the ball before rolling it back to Shane McCabe who picked his spot and fired the ball home. Relief for the Celtic Club but a huge blow to Kilwilkie.

With extra time over and the match tied at 3-3 it was down to penalties. With the Celtic Club keeper, Stewart Corey, in great form in the Summer League this year the Celtic Club went into this confident.

This was proven to be justified when Stewart got down low to his right to save the one missed kick in the entire shoot out and allow the Celtic Club to take home the shield.
