Celts storm into final

THE Celtic Club Lurgan No.1 were away to Donacloney in the semi-final of the Beckett Cup and came away with a deserved 3-0 victory.

This puts the Celtic Club in the final on Friday, May 4, at Oxford’s Knochramer Park.

The match was played on a very poor surface making it difficult for the Celtic Club to get the ball down and move it around as they like to do.

However despite the conditions they did they succeed. After only 15 minutes their dominance paid off with a terrific ball in from Stephen McConville which allowed Danny McKavanagh to blast home with his left foot.

A great start which would only get better as they continued to push for the second goal to give them some breathing space and it duly arrived five minutes from the break when Danny McKavanagh blasted home his and Celtic’s second. this time with his right foot. to give them a well earned 2-0 half-time lead.

The second half began with the Celtic Club wanting to make sure they didn’t let Donacloney back into it and were soon in the driving seat.

With just 10 minutes gone they were awarded a penalty which Ciaran Robinson netted to lead 3-0 on the day and it was this scoreline they held for the remainder of the match.

There were strong performances from Barry Seeley and Niall McPartland in the midfield which were matched by a man of the match performance from Danny McKavanagh who was terrific on the day and who just eclipsed Sam Haughey who terrorised the Donacloney left back all afternoon despite the close attention he was receiving.

It was a good day all round for the team as there wasn’t a poor player on show.

The match official deserves a special mention for his strict, no nonsense approach in a match that was played in a competitive manner but was won by the better team on the day.

Celtic can now look forward to their second semi-final in as many weeks when they host unbeaten Intermediate A side Dollingstown this coming Saturday with a 2pm kick off in Lord Lurgan Park.
