Chambers brothers on world cup trail

ROWING brothers Peter and Richard Chambers will visit the scene of their Olympic Silver medal triumph later this month after they were paired together in the lightweight double sculls for the second World Cup regatta of the season at the London 2012 venue of Eton Dorney.

Speaking after last week’s announcement Richard said he believed the decision would benefit them in the long term as the new Olympic cycle to Rio in 2016 begins.

“What happened last year happened,” he said. “We were Olympic silver medalists, we didn’t win which is what we set out to do and we can’t just keep dwelling on that and now its time to move on and I think we’re both doing that quite well by stepping out of the four and going into the double and creating a new challenge for ourselves.

“We’re not even thinking about Rio, it’s still a long way off and it would crazy to be thinking Rio, Rio every single day because we’d just burn out.”

Coleraine’s other Olympic medalist Alan Campbell returns to serious international since claiming the bronze last summer but will face tough opposition from Marcel Hacker and Ondrej Synek.

Campbell said: “I need to use the racing to help me move forward and to make sure I’m doing the right stuff and address any issues that may occur or any weaknesses I might have or alternatively establish what my strengths are. I’m ranked third in the world from the Olympics and I want to continue on at that level and looking forward to getting back into it.”
