Championship fixtures set for the weekend

A first round of Intermediate Championship fixtures will take place this weekend with six games pencilled in.

The various winners from this weekend’s action will go into the draw alongside Tr na ng and St. Paul’s who each received byes to the quarter finals.

As with last season, Division One side Cullaville look favourites to win the series, but in 2009 they were knocked out at the semi-final stage.

Tr na ng, who have dropped down from the Senior grade could also be in with a chance if they can field a fully-fit team.

Games involving local clubs are as follows;

St. Peter’s v An Port Mr: The White’s badly need a Championship run considering that, barring a miracle, they will be dropping a league division at the end of this season. St. Peter’s have just four points on the board in Division Two from fourteen outings, but their opponents sit second from bottom in the third flight. On current form, the Freecrow side should be strong enough to reach the last eight.

Sarsfields v Shane O’Neill’s: This game sees Division One pitted against Division Three, but considering both teams’ form, it looks more akin to an all-Division Two clash. Shanes have lost just once in sixteen outings and are eleven points clear of their nearest rivals at the top of the third flight. Given that the Sarsfields have conceded a huge amount of scores this season, the Hoops will need to be wary of playing an expansive game on the huge pitch at Ballycrummy. Sarsfields should have enough class to progress.

Wolfe Tones v Madden: The Tones and Madden have almost identical form this season and sit on fourteen points and thirteen points respectively at midway in the second division. This game looks to be a draw in the making. Last season, the ‘Cash side lost to eventual winners Newtownhamilton and they might need another outing to overcome Madden and reach a quarter final.
