Cheung claims UlsterU11 title to cap off sensational season

Matthew Cheung added the Ulster Under 11 Boys Singles title to the triple haul he won in Munster earlier in the season.

However, he was given quite a scare by Andrew Furey before coming through 21-19 in a game lasting 15 minutes but was able to find greater control in his second round robin game against Daniel Wynne and booked his place in the semi-final winning 21-6.

With Benjamin Darragh coming through with wins over Daniel McElhinney, Dylan Noble and Ewan Patterson, an exciting clash between this pair lasted all of 39 minutes. Cheung won the opening set 21-15 but Darragh edged ahead late in the second to win 21-19 and take the semi-final into a decider. It was anybody’s game as the game entered the final quarter.

Cheung’s greater consistency was to pay off and he was able to book his place in the final against David Downey, who was a 21-16 23-21 winner over Stuart Mccollam.

Having been on the edge of not progressing through to the final, Matthew Cheung took control of the opening set from the off and whilst Downey threatened to spoil the day, he regained control to win 23-21.

In the Boys Doubles, however, Downey was to get his revenge over the Stranmillis Primary pupil. He and partner Kevin Downey recorded a narrow 21-16 21-19 victory over Matthew and Stewart Mccollam in a final which could have gone either way.

The girls singles title went to Aine Crowe with a 21-8 21-9 victory over Katy Allen after Aine had knocked out the top seed Chloe Woods 21-9 in her opening game and went through the Group A without defeat.

Katy Allen had progressed through Group B defeating the number two seed Neasa Flynn 21-7 and Paige Woods came close to upsetting Neasa losing only 21-19.

The mixed doubles saw Benjamin Darragh and Leonie Ward lift the title 23-21 21-14 from David Downey and Siofra Flynn after top seeds Matthew Cheung and Chloe Woods were beaten 21-18 14-21 21-14 by Downey and Flynn.

In the Girls Doubles, the title went to Aine Crowe and Leonie Ward, who topped the table with three victories including a 21-4 21-15 win over Chloe and Paige Woods who finished in third place.
