Cheung retains Ulster U11 title

Ten year old Matthew Cheung of Alpha Badminton Club retained his Ulster Under 11 boys singles title at the weekend coming through the round robin qualifying with wins over Scott Gildea 21/12 and Rudi Smyth 21/6 to book his place in the semi-final where he met Dylan Noble.

There was an upset in the other qualifying group where Che Smyth came through a clash with Stuart McCollam 21/19 and had a 21/12 victory over Niall McCabe while Jamie Stephenson qualified in Group C with a 22/20 win over Dylan Noble and Jamie Ferguson of Banbridge District 21/19.

In the semi-final Che Smyth recorded a 21/7 21/6 victory over Stephenson while Cheung beat Noble 21/7 21/10 and had sufficient in reserve to take the title beating Smyth 21/12 21/17.

Cheung partnered Stuart McCollam to lift the boys doubles title with victories over Scott Gildea and Dylan Noble 21/9 21/16 and Niall McCabe and Jamie Stephenson 21/5 21/6 but his bid to lift a treble haul of titles was dashed when Stuart McCollam and Chloe Woods came out on top 21/15 21/16 against Matthew and Ella Cheung.
