Cheung shows he’s one to watch with two titles

Matthew Cheung showed why he is one of the country’s most promising youngsters by winning two titles at the Ulster Under 13 Open.

In the Boys Singles Matthew, a pupil at Stranmillis Primary in Belfast, saw off Dylan Noble, Paddy Nolan and Kevin Downey on route to the final, where he came back from losing the opening set 18-21 to win the next two 21-15 21-18.

In the Mixed doubles it was very much a matter of working through the various rounds with his partner Sophia Noble after knocking out the number two seeds in the opening match 21-8 21-14.

They recorded a 21-9 21-10 victory over Christopher O’Donoghue and Julia O’Reilly and then had a straight sets win over Jason Ferguson and Chloe Woods set up the final.

In the decider, Cheung and Noble secured the title, beating the top seed David Downey and Leonie Ward 21-13 21-12.

Matthew only out on the boys doubles title with his partner Stewart McCollam just being edged out in the final but second seeds David and Kevin Downey 25-23 23-21.
