City hosts Triathlon and Aquathon

The calendar of sporting events for Lisburn, the European City of Sport, continued with the ever-popular City of Lisburn Triathlon and Junior Aquathon, held on Sunday July 21, at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex.

The event, organised by Lisburn City Council, attracted record numbers of Athletes to this annual test of endurance and stamina.

In the Male Open Category of the Triathlon Paul Carroll came first with an overall finishing time of 00:55:20. Neville O’Neill finished 1:49 minutes later securing second place and Harry Spears lifted title of third with an overall finishing time of 00:58:45.

In the Female Open Category Anne Paul was crowned first with an overall finishing time of 01:05:26, closely followed by Judith Lonnen who finished in 01:05:53. Third place went to Emma Rice with an overall time of 01:08:43.

Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Margaret Tolerton, said: “It was great to see so many Triathletes taking part in this year’s City of Lisburn Triathlon. The event is one of the highlights of the year. I would like to congratulate all the winners and indeed everyone who put their skill and competitive drive to the test. The junior Aquathon is also extremely popular and I would also like to extend my congratulations to the winners and participants of this event.”

Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, Alderman Paul Porter, said: “The City of Lisburn Triathlon is a ‘Sprint Triathlon’. The 750m pool swim, 20km cycle and 5km run is suitable for both first-time and more experienced athletes. It showcases the athletes’ true strength and endurance on the day, following months of training. As Lisburn is the European City of Sport for 2013 events like the Triathlon and Aquathon are reinforcing the important role Lisburn plays in many different sporting fields. The council continues to support the sporting culture and sporting talent in our city, and will develop it in any way it can.”

The Junior Aquathon which is split into two categories of Under 12s and Under 15s consists of a 200m swim followed by 1200m run. In the female U12 there was a tie between Andrea Cox and Eve Dunford and in the female U15 Lauren Strange finished first.

In the male U12 Ben Harding finished first with Philip Cox securing first in the U15 category.
