City of DerryBadmintonclub celebrations

LONDONDERRY can celebrate the return of top class competitive squash to the city after a 15 years absence as the City of Derry Squash club celebrates its first birthday and enters its second season.

Last year saw the formation of the squash club, which is based in Brooke Park Leisure Centre. Club nights were organised every Thursday which allowed a platform for coaching and an opportunity for players to find new partners to challenge.

The enthusiasm for playing squash was boosted when the club organised two Open tournaments which were well attended and they provided quality viewing for spectators.

This progress, however, was not enough for the fledgling North-West club which wanted to reveal the hidden sporting talent of the local area so they entered a team in the competitive Ulster Squash League - in Division One!

And while the club did not finish at the top of the league table, it certainly held its own with a mid-table finish consolidating its position in this division for the new season which gets underway next month.

The talents of the number one player on the team, Gerry McGoldrick, were recognised by the Northern Ireland squash gurus and he was invited to represent both Ulster and Ireland during the season and it is hoped hoped that other players will follow in Gerry’s footsteps.

As the new season fast approaches, the club now hopes to build on last year’s success and the annual general meeting has been organised for tomorrow (Thursday), in Brooke Park.

As usual, club nights will take place on Thursday, and they started last night but the club is hoping to continue recruiting existing and new players, offering an opportunity for those players to learn and develop their skills.

Ladies and gents will all be made welcome should they wish to join the club and for further information contact Gerry McGoldrick on (0773) 943 0902.
