Clann na Derg get their season underway

THE newly amalgamated Clann na Banna-Aghaderg under 12s got their season off to a blistering start at the ‘Go-Games’ blitz in Glenn last Sunday, 25 March.

The young Clann na Derg team took honours in all three of their games to boost their confidence for the year ahead.

A long range point from Sean Casey opened the account for the year against St. Michael’s. Cailum Meara followed soon after with a goal before their opponents notched their first point.

The focused determination of Keelan Quigley paid off with a point soon answered by another St. Michael’s point before Casey sealed the game with a final score for Clann na Derg.

With their tails up, it was time to face hosts Glenn who proved to be tough opposition in last year’s league. Callum McConville opened the game with a terrific goal followed shortly with a point from a seemingly impossible angle. But Glenn fought back a with a series of points to put them in the lead.

When Keelan Quigley took possession 15 metres out, the ball was destined to nestle in the Glenn net. A great Jack Moore point took the Clann na Derg side to a three point lead only to have it snubbed with a Glenn goal. With a minute to go, up steps the solid midfielder Casey with a well taken point to nudge his side ahead for the finish.

It looked like there was no stopping the Banbridge-Ballyvarley alliance when the last game against Mitchel’s got underway. Their support play was coming together, working the ball from the back with solid performances from Eamonn McNally, Fearghal Vaughan, Conal Diamond and Ryan Donnelly.
