Close call says Jeffrey

LINFIELD may be strong favourites to lift the JJB Irish Cup on Saturday but David Jeffrey is having none of that.

The Blues' boss sees the finale to the domestic season as a very even contest and to complete the double his team will need to draw on all their resources and rely on a little slice of luck.

"First of all it's a great way to go into the final having won the league title. It takes some of the pressure off the players and the backroom team because that is the prime target. Now we have a great chance to complete the double again - the fourth time in five seasons," said Jeffrey.

"But it will take a massive effort to beat Portadown. I don't see anyone as favourites. In my book it is very finely balanced. This is Portadown's first season back in the top flight and they will use every ounce of energy they have to land a major trophy. I have told the players if you thought beating Glentoran was tough and beating Coleraine was tough, then this will be even tougher.

"However, we are looking forward to the challenge. The match and the result last week at Shamrock Park will have no bearing on Saturday's game and I would think Ronnie McFall feels the same. Ronnie has been 25 years at Shamrock Park and has won everything before so he is a formidable opponent.

"I have always said the Irish Cup final is a very special occasion and a great day for the fans from both camps. There is always a great atmosphere. We just need one last big effort from the players. Sometimes you also need a little bit of luck in the cup and hopefully it will be on our side. No matter what, it should be a good game from two good footballing sides."

There was another boost for Jeffrey ahead of the final when he was named Carling NI Writers' Manager of the Month for April.

"Never has an award felt so sweet," said David. "Getting this award felt as good as it did when I won my first one. It has been a very demanding year on me so I am thrilled to bits to lift this award."

It was only a few months ago Jeffrey was the target of abuse from a small section of the fans and during a torrid run he was told his position was being discussed by the board.

His answer - another league title and with a little luck an Irish Cup win.
