Club takes part in ‘Around the World’ programme

DURING November and December 2012, 14 adults from the Banbridge District took part in ‘Around the World through Sport’ which was organised by Challenge of Change in conjunction with the Newry Sports Partnership and the Polish Supplementary School, Banbridge.

The aim of the project was to use sport as a mechanism to appreciate cultural diversity, challenge racism and increase community cohesion.

The project has been managed by the PEACE III Southern Partnership’s Challenge of Change priority and supported by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE III) managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

‘Around the World through Sport’ enabled participants from different backgrounds, including Polish, Lithuanian and Northern Irish to take part in taster sessions of national sports, including basketball, Gaelic football, rugby, hurling, volleyball and badminton, as well as learning the background and cultural significance of each sport.

Participants have teamed up with the Moneyslane Football Club and will experience firsthand our national sporting traditions by attending a soccer match in Windsor Park and Gaelic game in Croke Park.

Participants will also enjoy a number of friendly soccer games and training sessions with members of the Moneyslane Football Club during April and May 2013.

One participant made the following comment: “This project has helped me to make friends and learn about the different sports around the world – it has been great fun.”
