Club’s Male Athlete of the Year Maxwell is first home in final race of East Coast series

The final event in the East Coast AC Club Championship Series was held on Saturday - a 5k race starting and finishing at Sandy Bay, Larne.

First to finish was international athlete Justin Maxwell, who completed the distance in 18:04. Andy Guy was second in 18:40, followed by Daniel Girvin in 19:16.

Murray Deller took fourth in 19:41, before Mark Jordan and Drew Girvin finished in 20:08 (fifth) and 21:11 (6th place) respectively. Brian Maltman continued his good form of late with a time of 21:20 (7th), with Alex Robertson (22:01 – 8th place), John Steele (22:26 – 9th) and Conor Sheridan (22:51 – 10th) all running well and completing the top ten.

Sandy Plumb looked strong as he crossed the line in 23:21 (11th place), followed by Lee Stirling in 23:45 (12th place); Lee’s time saw him awarded first place in the championship race once his handicap was added.

Glenda Girvin was the first lady home (25:00), followed by Ruth Maltman (26:05), Glenda Stewart (26:12).

At Sunday’s Firmus Energy City of Derry Triathlon - a 750m open water swim followed by a 20km cycle culminating in a 5km run - Adele Neill claimed 12th place in the ladies’ category in 1:20:20. Roy McMullan produced another top-class performance with a 1:29:02 finish time (218th).

On the same day, Phil Smyth ran the annual Flagstaff to Carlingford Mountain Race in an impressive 2:32:54 (50th) for the 11-mile distance. Three days earlier he finished the 3-mile Hill & Dale Race 9 event in 140th place (46:57).
