Coach Beggs hoping to end the year on a high with derby win

On 28 December the Firsts entertain Ballymoney in the Kukri Qualifying League - and it is a double header, also being played for the annual Tweed Cup.

To add to the excitement, on the same afternoon, the Thirds also entertain Ballymoney Thirds, again in the league and again it is a double header as they also contest the annual Robinson Cup.

As the teams get ready for action, Coleraine coach Richard Beggs is weighing up his options.

He said: “This is going to be a really big weekend for both clubs and there is no doubt that all the teams will be contesting the games as strongly as they possibly can.

“From our perspective it’s been a hard season and the injury attrition rate has been high.

“As a result we still have considerable injury problems, we will have quite a few key players unavailable but we won’t make a team decision until nearer the time.

“We also have the disruption of Christmas to contend with, but that goes for both clubs. It’s difficult to get training consistently and that could have a knock-on effect.

“What we can be sure of is that we will be giving it our best shot and we will be going out there looking for a win.

“I know that no matter who is selected we can depend on all our squad to give their best.

“What we also need is the support of club members and friends.

“A strong support on the sidelines really helps and we would encourage as many as possible to come along and support both our teams.”

In the run up to the game the Firsts were away to Cooke on Saturday in a crucial league clash, both sides looking for a win to help secure their league fortunes.

Looking back on the season so far Richard said: “We have had ups and downs this season so far and I want to give a sincere thanks to all the guys who have played their part.

“People have played through injury, have played up into the Firsts, some for the first time and the effort by everyone has been fantastic.

“Now we are looking forward to the same commitment as we move into the New Year and the rest of the season.”

The Ballymoney games kick off at 2.30pm at Sandel Park on Saturday 28 December - an ideal way to unwind after the Christmas festivities.
