Cochrane cards the round of his life with a gross 68

He beat competition from 119 other Banbridge GC members to win the Teddy Reade Cup on Saturday and produced the round of his life to do it.

Jim (12) was out in 34 shots with birdies at the third, fourth, eighth and ninth holes. He came back in 34 shots with birdies at the 15th and 17th holes.

That gave him a gross one under par 68, a nett 56 and a massive 49 stableford points.

In case you are interested, that is not the first time a player has had 49 points.

Aidy McEvoy had a similar score on Champions Day in September 2014.

And there was an even better score back in October 2003. Geoffrey Moorhead, playing off 19, went round in 71 shots, a nett 52 and 53 points.

Those are once in a lifetime rounds and Jim Cochrane is in a very elite group. His 49 points will not be bettered this year, that’s for sure.

Jim Lennon (18) was runner-up with 45 points. Nine times out of ten, that would be a winning score but nobody was going to get close to Jim Cochrane.

Rory Madeley (5) won the low section (0-12) with 42 points and a new member, Gordon Haire (8), was second with 41 points.

Malcolm Hanna (13) won the middle section (13-17) with 44 points. Dennis Lockhart (14) was runner-up with 42 points.

Kieran McGreevey (24) once again won the high section (18+) with 39 points. Gordon Enderson (21) was second, also with 39 points.

Connor Doran (+1) won the best gross with a two under par 67. He had five birdies in his round.

And, finally, the best senior player on the day was Verdun Bond (15) with 41 points.

But the man of the moment was Jim Cochrane. His 49 points was really an incredible round. He will remember it for a long time.

And, as always, there were a number of hard luck stories.

Colin McDonald and Cameron Morton both had 41 points.

Alan Caughey, Jonathan Ward, Michael Robinson and Jim Gracey all had 40 points, a mere nine points behind Jim Cochrane.
