Coleman pens new deal

DONEGAL footballer Seamus Coleman is being backed by fellow Everton stars in his bid to help Blackpool win promotion.

Coleman hopes to help Blackpool to beat Cardiff City in the Premiership promotion playoff this weekend.

The Toffees fullback has been highly influential in Blackpool's run to Wembley.

Teenage Everton star Jack Rodwell, who is rumoured to be interesting Manchester United, sent his best wishes to the on-loan Killybegs man via evertonfc.com: "I would love to watch him live but as I am on the beach right now its not possible! All the best Seamie lad!"

And Jose Baxter added: "I have already spoken to Seamus and I just want to tell him to keep playing as you have done all season and you will be top class again. Hopefully you can get a win under your belt at Wembley."

Meanwhile, the young footballer has voiced his delight after signing a new deal with Premiership club, Everton.

Coleman, who cost the Toffees just 60,000 when he joined from Sligo Rovers, last year has agreed a new four-year contract, taking him to 2014.

It is seen as a reward for an impressive campaign from the 21-year-old, who broke his way into the Everton first team before joining Blackpool on loan.

The Donegal lad himself sees his new deal as a reward.

He said: "I was playing to get a new contract because it shows that you've done alright, so I'm delighted," Coleman told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"When I came here I had a long enough contract but you always want to get another one to show that you've done something to earn it."

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international's loan at Blackpool ends on Monday, the day after their Wembley play-off final against Cardiff.

But Coleman said he would think about going out on loan again - if that's what David Moyes thinks is best for him.

"I'd be open to it and I'm going to do whatever David Moyes tells me to do. He's the boss and whatever he thinks is right for me I'll do.

"He hasn't got a bad record with young players so far. So whatever he thinks best, I will agree with."

Coleman made seven appearances for David Moyes's side last season, including a man-of-the-match performance on his home debut in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in December. His attacking displays in particular have endeared him to Everton supporters.

David Moyes confirmed last week that Coleman would return to Goodison after the weekend and has now rewarded the youngster with the new deal.

"I think he's someone who has caught the imagination of a lot of the supporters," he said.

"You've got to remember this is a boy we've taken from Ireland, we've paid 60,000 for him, we've brought him in and he's had very little of what I would call senior football...So we had to get him some games."

Londonderry teenager Shane Duffy is also on Everton's books.

Coleman was the second Everton player to agree new terms this week, Australia international Tim Cahill has also signed a contract extension as Everton move to tie up their best players on long term deals.

There are hopes Mikel Arteta and England star in the making, Jack Rodwell will do likewise, though South Africa's Steven Pienaar has put contract talks on hold until after the World Cup.
