Coleraine Ladies make it a double

COLERAINE Ladies Hockey Second XI completed a fantastic season on Saturday by claiming a league and cup double.

They had wrapped up the Junior Six league title earlier in the month giving them the taste of victory and with the team heading to Belfast as underdog for the Junior Cup final against NI Civil Service who play two leagues above them.

The Coleraine defence were put under some early pressure but Ursula Harper, Katherine Kemps, Karen Colgan and Rachel Wilson kept their opponents at bay. Midway through the half NICS won their first short corner, but Rachel Wilson showed great determination by throwing herself across the goal to block the forward’s shot.

Goalkeeper Roslynne Sheppard was called into action making several important stops. Coleraine started to get a foothold in the game and the broke the deadlock as Wilson’s sidline hit found its way through to Zoe Campbell who raced clear before coolly slotting past the keeper. They were unlucky not to add to their advantage before the break.

The hosts started to apply more pressure on the Coleraine circle and the pressure finally told as NICS equalised. Coleraine upped their game again and only a good save denied Ursula Harper from putting them back in front again. Both sides tried in vain to grab the winner before the end but to no avail so the game went into extra time golden goal.

Coleraine threw everything at their opponents. Skipper Carol Anne Agnew (left) had a shot cleared off the line, before Ursula Haprer thought she had netted the rebound only for it to be hacked away too. The second period produced much of the same with both teams just failing to grab the winner so it was on to penalty strokes.

Civil Service were up first but were denied by a great save from Coleraine keeper Roslynned Sheppard. Unfortunately for the Bannsiders Pamela Sweeney had her flick saved too. Roslynne was back between the sticks and she produced another save much to the delight of the travelling support.

Captain Carol Anne Agnew was up next and made no mistake to make it 1-0. Civil Service levelled it up with their next stroke, before Coleraine missed their third. But keeper Sheppard gave them the advantage again saving yet another flick. Next up for Coleraine was Ursula Harper who made no mistake making it 2-1 which meant NICS had to score their next.

But they couldn’t beat Coleraine’s hero and player of the match Sheppard who made another save to seal the win. Thanks to all who came and cheered on the girls and made is special for them. Thanks also to Ivan Jordan Coach for all his hard work throughout the season.
