Coleraine share the spoils with Larne

COLERAINE continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw at home to a very strong Larne side last Saturday.

The match started at a high tempo, and it was the visitors who created the early opportunities.

Sam Tayler in goals for Coleraine was more than able to keep her team level, but it required good work from all the defence to help her do so.

Hilary Andrews made a number of crunching tackles in and around Coleraine’s defence circle.

Larne continued to attack and won a number of penalty corners, but Alex Balmer made sure that none were converted.

Coleraine made some tactical changes strengthening the midfield with Sue Nutt, and allowing Lynsay Wallace and Rachel Miniham to push forward and join the attack.

Unfortunately Larne broke through the home defence to score the opening goal

But Coleraine responded with an equaliser through Katherine Miniham who ran from outside the 25 line, and scored with a reverse stick shot into the top corner of the net.

The pace of the game in the second half mirrored the first with both teams were breaking down play all over the pitch.

Leah Watton and Alison Nicholl worked hard at the back to contain the visiting forwards, and both Emma Jameson and Anna Breslin made life difficult at the other end for the defence. The team played skillfully as a unit with Rachel Miniham at the centre controlling the game.

The match finished all square - a good point for the hosts.

This Saturday Coleraine will play at home at the university at 2.30pm.

*COLERAINE Seconds produced an excellent performance to defeat Ballyclare Thirds 3-0 in their second game of the season.

After last week’s defeat, the Coleraine team were out to get their season back on track with a win, and started off the more dominant side.

Molly Kane made several good runs in midfield with the ball, and a few one-twos between Sarah Gilchrist and Molly led to several good chances for the home side. Victoria Wilson was unlucky not to send the home side ahead after her shot went just wide.

The lead came after Amy Nutt, who was playing her first game for the team, passed the ball through to Victoria Wilson jr, whose shot came off the keeper and Anna Breslin fired home.

After the restart, Ballyclare pressed forward and the defence of Catherine Kemps, Claire Adams, Amy Nutt and Emma McCauley had to deal with several strong attacks. Keeper Rebecca Crowe made a great save from a penalty corner and kept the team in front.

Sarah Gilchrist dominated in the centre of midfield, and played several good balls to the wide players.

Coleraine continued to dominate and had a string of penalty corners, which they were unlucky not to score from.

They added their second from a free hit just outside the Ballyclare circle with Victoria Wilson converting a Sarah Gilchrist pass.

Another string of penalty corners resulted in the third and final goal, with Anna Breslin getting her second goal of the game, slotting the ball in from close range on the rebound.
