Coleraine’s little ‘Olympians’ look forward to torch relay

Excitement was in the air at DH Christie Memorial Primary School as Mayor of Coleraine, Alderman Maurice Bradley, chatted to pupils about the London 2012 Olympic Torch coming to the Borough of Coleraine.

The Olympic Torch will be making its way through the Borough during the bank holiday weekend in June, aiming to attract thousands of residents and visitors. Details of the Olympic Events Programme will be forthcoming over the next few weeks as the excitement builds to see this incredible event.

Mayor Bradley, said: “The theme for all events in Northern Ireland during 2012 is ‘GIANTS’ and I am pleased that we can play our part because we have many ‘Giants’ in this Borough depending on their field of expertise, be that sport, the arts and the media.

“During the bank holiday weekend, Council will welcome the Torch Flame into Portrush on Sunday 3rd June. The Flame proceeds through the town on a series of ‘Kisses’ from one Torch Bearer to the next, before entering the East Strand evening event to celebrate the arrival with music and entertainment.

“The next afternoon, on Monday 4th June, the Flame will be hosted in the centre of Coleraine. Celebrations and events will support the official Torch Bearers on their route out of the Borough, taking in Articlave and Castlerock, before moving into the next council area.

“The Borough of Coleraine is home to so many fantastic sporting events and groups, including the Council run Wildcats Activ8 Club for children, which has recently been awarded an Olympics ‘Inspire Mark’.

“The Olympic Torch festivities will be part of a whole range of exciting high profile events in the Borough during 2012. Some of these are perennial favourites, such as the North West 200 and the International Airshow, while others are new, exciting and possibly ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunities.

“I have personally sent out a letter to local businesses, schools and community organisations asking them to support efforts to maximise the benefits for the area.

“There are a number of suggestions on how everyone can get involved with these great events. I have no doubt that all the people of the Borough will be delighted to support the Olympic Flame coming to their local area.”
