Colin lifts Mens Singles Over 35 title in Connacht

Alpha’s Colin Watterson lifted the Mens Singles Over 35 title in the Connacht Open Masters, though the final took over an hour to decide a victor.

The Alpha player needed to call upon all his reserves of fitness after dropping the opening set of his final against Mohit Kaliyar 21-14, but pulled back to level by taking the second 21-18 and as the deciding set entered its latter stages it was Watson who edged ahead to take the title 22-20.

Colin was also runner-up in the Mixed Doubles Over 35, partnering Sharon Knox but losing out 21-16 21-15 to Mohit Katiyar and Naomi Davies while also failing to get out of Group A in the Mens Doubles with Jamie Elliott.

Doreen McClements teamed up with Christine Graham in the Womens Doubles Over 55 only to lose in the final 21-16 21-13 to Jean Denihan and Cheryl Evans while in the Mixed Doubles Over 40 competition Doreen partnered Jeffrey Kearon to a 21-13 21-11 win over Seamus Halpin and Deirdre Hannigan.

Despite losing 21-11 21-16 in his opening match against David Kenny in the Mens Singles Over 65 category, Alpha’s Tony Clarke was to push Stanley Graham, the eventual champion, close in his second match.

He lost the opening set 21-11 but just when it seemed as if he was poised to level at one set all, it was Graham who was to take the second 21-19 and with Graham having earlier beaten Kenny in the opening match of this category 21-16 21-17, Alpha’s Clarke had to be content with 3rd place.

Partnering Dympna Sheridan in the Mixed Doubles Tony had to be satisfied with runner-up as they were to suffer a straight sets defeat at the hands of David Kenny and Janet Ferguson.
