College girls in cup action

Lurgan College travel to Royal School Armagh on Wednesday in the third round of the Senior Schools Cup campaign.

This game has the potential to be a great advert for schoolgirls hockey, with both teams fielding a blend of experienced and younger developing performers. The fact that it is also a Mid-Ulster derby also adds to the occasion, with many of the RS Armagh players also based in Lurgan for their club hockey.

The Lurgan College side began their schools cup season with a second round victory over Omagh Academy. In spite of horrendous weather conditions, the Co. Armagh outfit exhibited some exciting hockey and ran out 5-0 winners against a doggedly determined Omagh team. Samantha Bann secured two goals, Julie Morrow added a further two and captain Hannah Grieve converted from close range for a fifth goal.

Royal School Armagh progressed to the same stage after a close run contest against Larne Grammar School, where they were forced to a penalty shoot out to determine the winner.

The College team will be hoping to continue their form which has seen them lift the Senior Schools Tournament title already this season, but they know that the Royal School players will do their utmost to secure their own place in the quarter final.
