College team reach final

LURGAN College Medallion team progressed to the final of the Danske Bank Schools trophy after defeating Royal School Dungannon 29-0 at College Walk last Saturday.

Lurgan kicked off in perfect conditions and went on the attack right away and after three minutes took the lead when No 8 Harry Simpson picked up from a scrum, went blind and linked with James Patterson who scored in the corner to give the locals a perfect start. James then converted his kick from the side line to put the college into a 7-0 scoreline.

Ten minutes later, the College scored again after excellent linking between forwards and backs allowed full back Joel McCreary to score wide out on the left At this stage it really was all one way traffic and just before half time, a great forward surge resulted in Rhys Lilburn forcing his way over to give Lurgan a 17-0 lead at the break.

The second half continued in much the same vein with Dungannon using their heavy pack and Lurgan running from every opportunity and it was no surprise when McCreary scored again from a similar flowing move to put the game out of Dungannon’s reach.

There then followed a period of both teams cancelling each other out before the College finished with a flourish as Simpson picked up from a scrum and ran 60 metres for an excellent individual try. This was converted to leave the final score 29-0.

The College now play Dalriada in the final next Thursday March 14th at Antrim GS.
