Despite grey skies, conditions were pleasant when St Comgalls lined out against Ballycastle on Sunday afternoon.

St Comgalls were functioning well as a unit with Oisin Crilly, linking well Josh Henry and Myles Devine.

The trio created a point in the first minute, and looked to repeat the feat four mins later but the advancing Devine refused clear point opportunities, pressed on and banged home the goal.

Ballycastle were feeding on scraps and converted a free, but when St Comgalls sent in a speculative ball it looked to be going harmfully wide.

However the visitors keeper thought he would stamp his mark on the game with a physical challenge on the diminutive frame of Paddy O’Connor and sent him flying with the ball nowhere near. Myles Devine made no mistake with the penalty to stretch the lead to 7 points.

Ballycastle tried to respond and put the ball into dangerous areas with a couple of goal mouth scrambles including one where the St Comgalls keeper Joe McKernan bravely kept it out at the cost of clashing with his own upright.

Myles Devine and Josh Henry kept the scoreboard ticking over with points before Eoin Gribbon scored a beauty from long range. When Caolan McKeown was brought on as a substitute he wasted no time in establishing himself with a point.

Half-time score St Comgalls 2-7 v 0-2 McQuillans Ballycastle

Although Ballycastle earned the first score of the second period St Comgalls didn’t risk them coming back into the contest as Dylan Murdock cracked in a confident goal. As the Antrim men pressed in attack they were drawing frees and Paddy Quinn and Myles Devine shared scoring honours half a dozen times depending on which side they fell to. The pair were also in fine form from play with Quinn clipping over after a probing run, and Devine adding a couple of classy efforts.

St Comgalls were playing well and wanted to build to the scoring margin in case of any points ties at the end of the season. When they earned a penalty, Keeper Joe McKernan took the responsibility and refused the simple point, smashing home for goal.

It was a good performance from the St Comgalls men, Conor McLornan was robust in defence and the returning Oisin Crilly (hand injury) was involved in a lot of distribution.

Josh Henry was getting on plenty of ball, as was his fellow speedster Paddy O’Connor. St Comgalls management would have been pleased with the display and will go on to face Mitchell’s next Sunday with confidence.

Meanwhile, the club’s under-age teams were also in action this week as the under-14s and under--12 enjoyed some game time against St Mary’s Rasharkin and both teams gave good accounts of themselves.
