Convincing victory for Second XV over Malone

Ballymena Seconds hosted Malone Seconds at Eaton Park on Saturday and cruised to a 43-21 win.

From the kick off it was Ballymena who set the pace and within minutes found themselves going in front when Alan Smith’s pace cut the Malone defence apart to score to the right of the post. Rory Drysdale added the conversion, 7-0.

Ballymena’s quick start to the game shocked Malone and before they could recover, Ballymena’s Shane McBurney crossed the line to score after a very strong maul. Rory Drysdale added the extra points, 14-0.

WIth 20 minutes gone on the clock Ballymena scored their third try of the game. Rory Drysdale broke down the wing before popping the ball inside to the charging Shane McBurney who scored under the posts. Drysdale added the extras, 21-0.

The first half was coming to an end when Ballymena put a great team move together which Mikey Smith finished to the left of the posts. Drysdale added the conversion. Half time 28-0.

The second half started with the same intensity has the first half and again Malone suffered an early blow. Rory Drysdale superb cross field kick found full back Robbie Magreer sprinting down the wing to score in the corner. The conversion was missed, 33-0.

Malone finally had some ball possession from the kick off and after a few phases finally got on the score board when their winger went over in the corner. The conversion was added, 33-7.

It was the 58th minute before Ballymena added to their points and this time it was from the boot of Rory Drysdale after Malone gave away a penalty, 36-7. From the restart Malone found space in the Braidmen’s defence to score under the posts. The conversion was good, 36-14.

With the game now entering the last 10 minutes the Ballymena backs put together another training ground move which resulted in Alan Smith getting his second try of the day when he scored under the posts. Rory Drysdale added the conversion, 43-14. With minutes left on the clock Malone scored their third try when some poor defending allowed their centre to score left of the posts. The conversion was added bringing the final score to 43-21.
