Coronation Cup qualifiers at Portstewart

THE qualifying rounds for the prestigious Coronation Cup were played last Thursday and Saturday on the Strand Course at Portstewart Golf Club.

Among those who missed the cut on Thursday were Gerald Bradley who scored a net 72 off his two handicap followed by C Fulton, two back on 74 off 14. Andrew Stewart off four also returned a net 74.

Saturday saw much better weather and consequently better scores with Jamie Knipe (14) bring in a net 67. Birdies at 3 and 13 helped Jamie, but a great two over gross on the back nine left him one clear of R Jackson (24) who, in spite of an eight at 13, returned a net 68.

Lee Marshall was third on the day with a 69. We were not going to mention his 10 at the seventh but having met him in the clubhouse and heard at length his explanation about the two lost balls off the tee, we have to include this!

Jonathon Doherty (11) also had a steady net 69 as did David Lamont.

A total of 64 qualified and the first round must be completed by May 1.

The next Portstewart Open Seniors competition is to be held on the Riverside course next Wednesday (April 21).
