“Rory Best’s selection for the British and Irish Lions touring party is richly deserved and a great honour,” he said.

“Rory is a credit to his family who have a long tradition of playing rugby and to his home club, Banbridge Rugby Club and Ulster Rugby.

“For a local player who came up through the ranks at Banbridge Rugby Club to be representing the British and Irish Lions on their landmark 125th anniversary tour is a wonderful achievement and one we should be rightly proud of!

“Rory has proved time and time again what a world class rugby player he is and I wish him and the British and Irish Lions every success in this sporting campaign.’
